Festival of the Arts Commemorative Poster unveiled

(COLUMBIA, MO) - Frank Stack’s oil on canvas painting titled
Missouri River-August has been chosen as the Commemorative Poster for
the 2007 Columbia Festival of the Arts. The work was selected from 156
images submitted by 26 Missouri artists through a jury process.
Missouri River-August was created in August of 2005 when Stack
and some artist friends met at Harley Park in Boonville. There Stack
painted what he terms “an ordinary view” of a summer landscape. When
describing the work, Stack notes that his goal was to “key up the
color, as Van Gogh did” and states that he believes that “a painting
should be graphic, with brush strokes creating rhythm and pattern.” He
sums up his approach with the following: “I endeavor to create a
painting that is resolved so there are no lazy parts. Everything should
be important, as interesting all the way through as a poem would be.”
Born in Houston, Texas, Stack received his BFA from the
University of Texas and his master of art degree from the University of
Wyoming. After post-graduate studies in Chicago, New York and Paris,
Stack began a 40-year career as a professor of art at the University of
Missouri.
While at MU, Stack developed an international reputation as a
painter, print maker and comic artist. He has published two monographs
on his work, and his art has been featured in American Artist, The
Artist's Magazine and The Village Voice. As a graphic novelist, he
collaborated with writer Harvey Pekar on American Splendor comics, and
the acclaimed graphic novel, Our Cancer Year, which won the 1995 Harvey
Award for Best Graphic Album of Original Work. Stack's drawings from the
book were featured in the 2003 Academy-award nominated film, American
Splendor. Stack retired in 2003 to devote himself entirely to making
art.
The 2007 Commemorative Poster, Missouri River-August, can be
purchased at Deck the Walls in the Columbia Mall, at the city’s Office
of Cultural Affairs, 1 S. Seventh Street, or at the Columbia Festival of
the Arts, to be held Sept. 29- 30 on Courthouse Square in downtown
