Second annual Low-Car Diet Challenge ready to kick off
(COLUMBIA, MO) - The second annual Low-Car Diet Challenge
encourages participants to accomplish all travel during the month of
September without using an automobile, though mass transit is allowed.
The Challenge begins at 12:01 a.m. on Sept. 1 and ends at midnight on
Oct. 1.
The purpose of the Challenge is to not only encourage active
transportation, but also document the health and environmental benefits,
along with the challenges of active transportation, through the journal
participants will be asked to complete. Those who participate can travel
by foot, bike, wheelchairs and other mobility devices, city buses,
school buses, shuttle buses and trains. The modes of travel NOT allowed
include cars, taxicabs, vans and airplanes.
For contestants with certain unavoidable commitments, two new
categories have been created. The “Weekly Shopper” category allows
four round-trip car journeys in town, and the “Business Traveler”
category allows one out-of-town trip utilizing cars, taxis and/or
airplanes.
Contestants can win prizes from Uprise Bakery, Grill One 5, Main
Squeeze, Klunk’s and the Mayor’s Council on Physical Fitness and
Health. The contestant who writes the most entertaining journal, and
completes the Challenge, will receive a gold pass to the 2008 True/False
Film Festival and a free bike tune-up from Klunk’s.
The Low-Car Diet Challenge is sponsored by the PedNet Coalition
and the Ragtag Cinema and is a program of the Active Living by Design
project of the PedNet Coalition and the Columbia/Boone County Health
Department. For more information, go to www.pednet.org.
