Afternoon fire destroys home in southwest Columbia
COLUMBIA, MO (June 9, 2007) - At approximately 1:04 p.m., units of the
Columbia Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 2513
Limerick Lane. Upon arrival, firefighters found the home to be three
quarters involved in heavy fire. The home was located down a long
driveway which made accessing it very difficult for fire crews. The
first arriving Quint laid its own water supply line which prevented
other apparatus access.
The Quint is equipped with an elevated water tower which aided
considerably in bringing the fire under control in a rapid fashion. The
upper story of the home was fully engulfed upon arrival and the roof was
completely burned away. Crews began salvage operations in the basement
and on the first floor while others were bringing the fire under
control. The owners of the home were away on a trip and family members
on the scene were still trying to make contact with them.
An ambulance from University Hospital arrived prior to fire apparatus
and one of the paramedics was able to rescue the family's dog from the
basement by breaking the glass door and retrieving him to safety. No
injuries to civilians or fire personnel took place, and the fire remains
under investigation at this time. Five fire apparatus and several
administrative vehicles responded to the incident.
Damage estimates are in the area of $1million, including structure and
personal property.
Additional information will be released as it becomes available.
