Boards and commissions applications are available 
									
	(COLUMBIA, MO) - The Columbia city clerk is accepting
applications for boards and commissions. Applications must be received
by the clerk’s office, 701 E. Broadway, 4th Floor, by noon on Friday,
July 6. Applications are available at the clerk’s office or may be
found on the city’s Web site at www.GoColumbiaMo.com on the City
Council page. The following are current boards and commissions
openings:
●	The Building Construction Codes Commission has nine vacancies.
One regular member and one alternate member (to serve in the absence of
the regular member) with terms expiring August 1, 2010, are needed for
each of the following categories: professional engineer (experience in
structural/civil); professional engineer (experience in
electrical/mechanical); residential rental property owner; and master
plumber. An alternate member with the term expiring August 1, 2008, is
also needed in the following category: person experienced in fire
prevention. The Commission periodically reviews and makes
recommendations relating to building construction codes. Monthly
meetings are held the fourth Monday at 4:30 p.m.
●	The Bicycle & Pedestrian Commission has three vacancies. Two
members, with terms expiring July 31, 2009, and July 31, 2010, shall
have knowledge of bicycling, bicycle safety and/or bikeways. One member,
with the term expiring July 31, 2010, shall have an interest in
pedestrian safety and infrastructure. All must be qualified voters of
the city. The Board advises the Council on issues relating to sidewalks,
walkways and trails. Monthly meetings are held the third Wednesday at 7
p.m.
●	The Community Development Commission has one vacancy with the
term to expire Nov. 1, 2008. The member must be a qualified voter of
Ward 6 and shall not serve on the board of directors or be employed by
any agency which applies for funding through the commission or which
receives funding upon recommendation of the commission. The Commission
acts in an advisory capacity in all matters pertaining to community
development. Monthly meetings are held on call.  
●	The Disabilities Commission has one vacancy with the term to
expire June 15, 2009. The member shall own or operate businesses within
the Columbia area and must be a resident of the city of Columbia. The
Commission considers concerns relating to residents with disabilities.
Monthly meetings are held the second Thursday at 3 p.m. 
●	The Board of Electrical Examiners has three vacancies with terms
to expire August 1, 2010. One member must be a registered professional
engineer, one must be a licensed electrician and one must be layperson.
The Board is empowered to give examinations for electricians’ licenses
and certificates.  Meetings are held on call.
●	The Environment & Energy Commission has one vacancy with the
term to expire June 1, 2009. The member must be a qualified voter of the
city and should have knowledge in matters pertaining to the environment.
The Commission serves in an advisory capacity for all matters pertaining
to environmental protection and conservation. Monthly meetings are held
the fourth Tuesday at 7 p.m.
●	The Board of Health has one vacancy with the term to expire Aug.
31, 2008.  The member must be a dentist and a registered, qualified
voter of the city. The Board acts in an advisory capacity to the Council
on matters pertaining to public health and animal control. Monthly
meetings are held the second Thursday at 3  p.m.
●	The Health Insurance Appeals Board has one vacancy with the term
to expire Feb. 16, 2010. The member must have substantive professional
experience in benefits administration for a large organization. The
Board hears appeals from the decisions of the administrator. Monthly
meetings are held on call.
●	The Internet Citizens Advisory Group has one vacancy with the
term to expire October 15, 2008. Members assess the user-friendliness
and effectiveness of the city’s Internet activities. The Group makes
recommendations to the staff and Council on resource priority for the
city’s effective utilization of the Internet.  Meetings are held the
third Wednesday every other month at 5 p.m.
●	The Mayor’s Committee On Physical Fitness has one vacancy to
be appointed by the mayor. The Committee educates the public about the
importance of regular physical fitness activity and promotes, initiates
and encourages local physical fitness and sports programs in the
community. 
Monthly meetings are held the second Monday at 12:30 p.m.
●	The Board of Mechanical Examiners has one vacancy with the term
to expire June 17, 2009. The member shall be a registered professional
engineer and a resident of the city of Columbia. The Board is empowered
to give examinations for mechanical heating, ventilation, air
conditioning and refrigeration licenses and certificates. Meetings are
held  the second Tuesday every other month at 5 p.m.
