Life saving honor
COLUMBIA, MO (March 19, 2007) -- At tonight’s City Council meeting at
7 p.m., Bob Pruitt, Bob Sutherland, Barry Trader and Steve Wilson will
be honored by the Council and presented life saving awards from the
Columbia Fire Department.
On December 11, 2006, around 9:10 a.m., truck driver Howard Zumwalt was
on his usual route delivering a load of coal to MU’s power plant
facility. The trip was anything but usual when Mr. Zumwalt suffered a
heart attack on the steps of the plant.
When discovered by power plant employees, Mr. Zumwalt was not breathing
and did not have a pulse. Remembering their life safety training, Bob
Pruitt, Bob Sutherland, Barry Trader and Steve Wilson jumped into
action. They called 9-1-1 and began CPR with chest compressions. The
facility’s AED (automated external defibrillator) machine was employed
and the Columbia Fire Department arrived on the scene to take over
patient care.
Mr. Zumwalt was transported by ambulance to the hospital. The heroic
efforts of the power plant employees made a difference between life and
death for Mr. Zumwalt. Happily, five days later he was released from the
hospital.
Tonight in front of the City Council, the mayor and assistant fire
chief of the Columbia Fire Department will present each man with the
"Life Safety Award" consisting of a certificate and a medallion. Please
join us tonight to honor these local heroes.
