City of Columbia recognized for stormwater efforts
COLUMBIA, MO (April 11, 2008) - The city of Columbia has received
national attention for its water quality outreach efforts. In 2007, the
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) featured Columbia in a
national newsletter publication, and listed the city on its
Web site for exemplary outreach efforts.
In March, Columbia’s Show Me Yards and Neighborhood’s program was
presented on a national EPA webcast, which was broadcast over the
Internet. Mona Menezes’ presentation, titled “Managing Nutrients in
Your Backyard and Community” highlighted Columbia’s stormwater
outreach program. The webcast was broadcast nationwide to 44 states at
over 250 locations.
Columbia’s stormwater management program will soon be highlighted in
the national trade journal Stormwater, which is planned for August 2008.
Environmental Services Manager Steve Hunt said “Columbia leaders
support efforts that benefit the environment and make Columbia a better,
healthier community, which is why our programs are receiving national
attention.” Hunt was interviewed along with stormwater educator Mona
Menezes and stormwater engineer Tom Wellman.
John Glascock, director of Public Works, said “It’s an honor for
Columbia to be recognized for its innovative approach to stormwater
management. We are setting the standards for other cities our size.”
Rutgers University has also taken note of Columbia’s stormwater
achievements. Rutgers has invited Mona Menezes, outreach coordinator, to
speak at its statewide conference. Menezes’ presentation, titled
“Show-Me Yards & Neighborhoods: Creating Environmentally Savvy
Consumers and Business Professionals”, will be presented at the New
Jersey conference in May.
