Students study the science of energy efficiency

(Columbia, MO) - Columbia Water and Light staff will jump into
hot water at the Columbia middle schools this week as they teach energy
concepts to 7th grade science students. The Energy Choices program
includes two visits by Columbia Water and Light staff to the schools.
During the first visit, energy concepts are explained with emphasis on
how science relates to energy use. The second visit focuses on how
students can determine the amount of energy they use to heat water for
showering and how much it costs.
Jay Hasheider, energy services supervisor says, “We are trying
to show how science connects with the real world. Identifying how much
energy is used in showering is a perfect opportunity because it uses
science to measure and calculate an unknown that students can connect to
an everyday activity.”
The introductory session provides a global view of energy
including identification of what energy resources are available, how
electricity is produced at the Columbia Power Plant, and the science of
infrared thermography. An energy bike is also used to demonstrate how
much electricity students can produce by pedaling the bike.

Approximately a week later, a second visit is made to focus on
energy consumption for heating water. Students are shown how to
calculate both energy use and cost (based on current energy prices) and
are provided a tool kit to measure the temperature and flow of water in
their shower at home. The second day is conducted as a lab in the
individual science classes.
