Groundbreaking ceremony planned for City Hall expansion
COLUMBIA, MO (May 8, 2008) - The city of Columbia invites the public to
attend a groundbreaking ceremony for Phase 2 and Phase 3 of the City
Hall expansion. The ceremony will be held on Wednesday, May 21, at 8:30
a.m. at the corner of Eighth and Broadway, on the east side of the
Daniel Boone Building.
Phase 2 involves demolishing the current utility services “annex”
at 8th and Broadway followed by construction of a five-story addition on
the east side of the Daniel Boone Building. Scheduled for completion by
late 2009, plans include a plaza which will feature public space. Phase
3 will include complete interior renovation of the Daniel Boone
Building, plus energy-efficient windows, a new reflective roof and an
exterior facade compatible with the new addition. Work will take about
one year.
Phase I was completed this spring with the addition of lobby
renovations and new offices for Treasury Management and Utility Customer
Services, including a canopied, drive-thru area for utility customers,
and temporary offices for the Finance Department in the existing Daniel
Boone Building.
This project is expected to be complete in fall 2010. Building
construction cost for this project is approximately $21 million. Once
completed, City Hall will be LEED (Leadership in Energy and
Environmental Design) certified. LEED promotes sustainability
performance in key areas including: sustainable site development, water
savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental
quality. This will be the second city building to be LEED certified, the
first being the Wabash Station which received extensive renovations in
2007.
During construction, the sidewalk and half of Eight Street will be
closed from the parking garage to Broadway restricting pedestrian and
vehicle traffic, as well as the Broadway sidewalk and north parking
spaces along Broadway in front of the construction from Eight Street
past Guitar Street. The alley running east and west from Seventh Street
to Eight Street will be closed to through traffic as well as Guitar
Street that runs north from Broadway to the east/west alley. Seventh
Street access will remain open during construction. The drive-through at
the Daniel Boone Building will remain open during construction with
access only from Seventh Street.
More information about the expansion project is available on the
city’s Web site at www.GoColumbiaMo.com.
