West Boulevard Safe Routes To School community planning
meeting

(COLUMBIA, MO) - The Public Works Department announces a
community planning meeting titled “How Kids Get to School” for West
Boulevard Elementary. The meeting will be held on Monday, May 12, from
5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the West Boulevard Elementary gymnasium. A
follow-up open house will also be held on Tuesday, May 13, at 5:30 p.m.
to 6:30 p.m. to present information that is gathered at the Monday
meeting.
Mark Fenton, host of PBS’s America Walking and a nationally
recognized expert on walking, will be the meeting facilitator. The
project is a cooperative effort between the city of Columbia, MoDOT Safe
Routes To School program, The PedNet Coalition and the Columbia School
District.
In order to obtain the best feedback, parents of children
attending the school and residents from the local area, as well as other
interested parties, are urged to attend the meeting. Childcare and
refreshments will be provided for the meeting. Please send an RSVP to
Ian Thomas at ian at pednet.org or 239-7916 if you plan to attend.
The project partners are seeking public input as part of a
planning process to provide children the opportunity to experience a
healthy walk each morning and afternoon. Creating a more walk-friendly
location should help relieve congestion near the front door of the
school. This, in turn, could help enhance safety and encourage more
bicycling and pedestrian travel to the school.
The city believes it may be possible to use the knowledge gained
at this event to pursue similar pick-up and drop-off locations at other
schools in the community.
If you have any questions about the meeting, please contact any of the
above contacts.
