Seventh annual Bike, Walk & Wheel Week garners record participation

Columbia, Mo. - Once again, Columbians showed their enthusiasm for the
Mayor’s Challenge: Bike, Walk & Wheel Week. More than 4,400
participants registered for the 2008 weeklong series of events, which
will conclude tomorrow with a Mother’s Day weekend bike ride. The
events and activities were designed to encourage everyone to use active
modes of transportation, like walking or biking, to get to work, school
or other destinations. Today, Columbians who chose to bike, walk or
wheel were invited to a free breakfast at one of 11 breakfast stations
around town.
Bike, Walk & Wheel Week is a part of GetAbout Columbia, which is a
community-wide program designed to encourage active modes of
transportation-travel other than in cars. Funding for GetAbout Columbia
is provided by the Federal Highway Administration’s Non-Motorized
Transportation Pilot Program. For more information, visit the Web site
at www.getaboutcolumbia.com, or call the GetAbout Columbia office at
(573) 442-7189.

Final Bike, Walk & Wheel Week Activity:
Saturday, May 10
Mother’s Day Weekend Bike Ride, 11 a.m.
This 7-mile guided ride on the MKT Trail begins at Twin Lakes Shelter
and ends at Flat Branch Park.
