Vehicle accident results in gas leak, evacuation in downtown Columbia
COLUMBIA, MO (May 13, 2008) - Columbia firefighters were called at 1:09
p.m. on Tuesday, May 13, to 903 University Avenue, The Flying Cow Shirt
Company, for a report of a natural gas leak.
Firefighters arrived and discovered the gas meter on the east side of
the building had been struck, as a result of a minor traffic accident,
and was leaking natural gas. Fire crews, with the assistance of the
University of Missouri Police Department and the Columbia Police
Department, closed both University Avenue and Ninth Street in the
immediate area of the incident. As a precaution, 903 University Avenue
and the Columbia Professional Building at 909 University Avenue were
evacuated. Both the evacuations and road closures were lifted after
approximately one hour.
Firefighters used combustible gas monitors to verify there was no
natural gas inside the buildings near the incident. There was no fire,
structural damage or injuries related to the gas leak or the vehicle
accident. Ameren UE crews responded and stopped the gas leak.
Firefighters remind residents to use caution when operating motor
vehicles, or other equipment, in the immediate area of natural gas lines
or meters.
