Public input sought for City Hall art

(COLUMBIA, MO) - Artist Howard Meehan is researching Columbia
and Boone County history for his planned sculpture for the new City
Hall.
Using the working title “Keys to the City,” Meehan has
described his eventual sculpture as having “[i]mages…embedded
into…glass panels such as old photos, text and quotes that document
and reflect the spirit and history of the community.”
To determine the content of the glass panels, Meehan has met
with many local historians and visited local depositories of historical
information. He is interested in receiving input from the general
public, as well. To that end, community members are invited to suggest
significant events, people or places in Columbia’s past or present for
consideration.
To submit suggestions, go to the city’s Web site at
www.GoColumbiaMo.com/Arts to access an electronic comment box.
Suggestions may also be submitted by emailing oca at GoColumbiaMo.com, by
mail to the Office of Cultural Affairs, P.O. Box 6015, Columbia, MO
65205 or by fax to (573) 874-7681. Information received by Nov. 10 will
be provided to Meehan so that he can incorporate it into his research.
The city’s Standing Committee on Public Art and Commission on
Cultural Affairs selected Meehan last year to create site-specific
public art for the new City Hall and its associated streetscape and
plaza. The City Hall public art project is part of Percent for Art, a
program established by city ordinance in May 1997. It allows for one
percent of costs of eligible city new and renovation construction
projects be set aside for site-specific artwork.
Percent for Art is coordinated by the city’s Office of
Cultural Affairs. For more information, call (573) 874-7512 or e-mail
oca at GoColumbiaMo.com.
