Solar One program launch set for Thursday
(COLUMBIA, MO) - Columbians can make an investment in locally
generated solar power through a new program called Solar One. Columbia
Water & Light’s customers can help develop this renewable resource by
contributing $4 a month through their monthly utility bill.
To kick off this program, Columbia Water & Light is inviting the
public to an event being held behind the West Ash pump station, at the
intersection of Bernadette and Tiger Lane, on Thursday, Oct. 9, at 10
a.m. Representatives from The Dow Chemical Company, Missouri Solar
Applications, Quaker Oats and the Solar Electric Power Association will
speak at the event.
Solar energy is a wonderful renewable energy resource but is two
to three times more expensive than other renewable options in our
region. In order to offer a solar energy option to Columbians who cannot
afford their own systems, the Solar One program was developed.
Solar One energy is generated through local solar systems
located on city-owned property or at Columbia businesses. The first
Solar One projects will produce enough energy to sell 140 blocks of
Solar One energy. One block of energy is 100 kilowatt hours, which will
be sold for $48 annually or $4 a month. This voluntary program requires
customers to either sign up at www.GoColumbiaMo.com or call
573-874-7325.
