Wanted: Citizen input for police chief search

COLUMBIA, MO (September 5, 2008) - Citizens interested in discussing
desired qualities in the city’s next police chief are invited to a
community focus group on Thursday, Sept. 11, from 6 - 7:30 p.m., in
rooms A/B, Activity and Recreation Center (ARC), 1701 W. Ash Street.

The session will be conducted by Slavin Management Consultants. It is
part of a search process that started earlier this year when former
Chief Randy Boehm retired after a long career with the Police
Department.

City Manager Bill Watkins said that this search sets a new local
standard for public involvement in police chief recruitment. “The
Slavin group’s commitment to hearing citizen voices is a huge benefit
to Columbia. They want - and we want - a good fit between the new chief
and our community,” Watkins said.

Starting today, the public also may submit comments through the
city’s Web site at www.GoColumbiaMo.com (see the link under
“Announcements”). This option will be available through Sept. 22.

Slavin Management Consultants, based in Norcross, Ga., has helped its
public sector clients with human resource and staffing issues for 20
years. A citizen advisory committee, appointed by Watkins, recommended
the firm after reviewing proposals from three applicants.
