Boards and commissions applications are available 
									
	(COLUMBIA, MO) - The Columbia city clerk is accepting
applications for boards and commissions. Applications must be received
by the clerk’s office, 701 E. Broadway, 4th floor, by noon on Friday,
Oct. 3. Applications are available at the clerk’s office or on the
city’s Web site at www.GoColumbiaMo.com on the City Council page. The
following are current boards and commissions openings: 
●	The Building Construction Codes Commission has two vacancies for
alternate members (to serve in the absence regular members) for each of
the following categories: professional engineer with experience in
electrical/mechanical engineering (term to expire Aug. 1, 2010) and a
master plumber (term to expire Aug. 1, 2010. The commission periodically
reviews and makes recommendations relating to building construction
codes. Monthly meetings are held the fourth Monday at 4:30 p.m.
●	The Community Development Commission has three vacancies with
terms to expire Nov. 1, 2011. One member each is needed from Ward 1,
Ward 5 and Ward 6. All must be qualified voters of the city. Members
shall not serve on the board of directors or be employed by any agency
which applies for funding through the commission or which receives
funding upon recommendation of the commission. The commission acts in an
advisory capacity in all matters pertaining to community development.
Monthly meetings are held on call.   
●	The Cultural Affairs Commission has four vacancies with terms to
expire Oct. 31, 2011. One must be from the business and professional
community in the Special Business District; one must be a layperson with
no specialized knowledge in the arts; and two must have significant
knowledge and have demonstrated interest in one or more areas of the
arts, including music, dance, literature, visual art, theatre, folk art,
media art, design and art education.  Members shall not serve on the
board of directors or be employed by any agency which applies for
funding through the commission or which receives funding upon
recommendation of the commission. The commission advises the council in
all matters pertaining to the arts and cultural environment of the city.
 Monthly meetings are held on the second Monday at 4:15 p.m.  
●	The Board of Health has one vacancy with the term to expire Aug.
31, 2011.  The member must have an interest in public health. The board
acts in an advisory capacity to the council on matters pertaining to
public health and animal control. Monthly meetings are held the second
Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
●	The Mayor’s Committee on Physical Fitness has one vacancy to
be appointed by the mayor with the term to expire Nov. 30, 2009. The
committee educates the public about the importance of regular physical
fitness activity and promotes, initiates and encourages local physical
fitness and sports programs in the community. Monthly meetings are held
as needed; quarterly meetings are 
the second Monday of the designated month at 12:30 p.m.  
●	The Board of Mechanical Examiners has one vacancy with the term
to expire June 17, 2011. The member must be a general contractor not in
the HVACR business and a resident of the city of Columbia. The board is
empowered to give examinations for mechanical heating, ventilation, air
conditioning and refrigeration licenses and certificates. Meetings are
held the second Tuesday of the month at 5 p.m.
●	The New Century Fund Board has vacancies with terms to expire
Sept. 30, 2011. Both members should have an interest in the future of
the city of Columbia and the funding needs required to achieve future
success. Both must be current residents and qualified electors of the
city of Columbia. The New Century Fund  Inc. is a Missouri
not-for-profit corporation. Meetings are held on call.
●	The Parks and Recreation Commission has one vacancy with the
term to expire May 31, 2011. The member must be a registered qualified
voter of the city. The commission acts in an advisory capacity in all
matters pertaining to public recreation. Monthly meetings are held the
third Thursday at 7 p.m.  
●	The Substance Abuse Advisory Commission has three vacancies with
terms to expire Oct. 31, 2011. One member shall represent the health
professions; one shall be a student under age 25; and one shall have
demonstrated interest in and concern for substance and alcohol abuse
problems in the community. The commission promotes coordination of
programs intended to prevent and eliminate alcohol and substance abuse.
Monthly meetings are held the second Wednesday at 12 p.m.
