FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Columbia Fire Department receives National Fire Service Seat Belt
Pledge Award for 100 percent participation
COLUMBIA, MO (April 20, 2009) - On Friday, Jan. 9, 2009 the Columbia
Missouri Fire Department received 100 percent of the department’s
signatures, pledging to wear seat belts. The 136 signatures were given
in response to the National Fire Service Seat Belt Pledge in honor of
Brian Hunton (see excerpts below).
About the campaign
Firefighter Christopher Brian Hunton, 27, was a member of the Amarillo,
Texas, fire department for one year. On April 23, 2005, he fell out of
his fire truck responding to an alarm and died two days later from his
injuries. Brian was not wearing his seat belt.
The Pledge
I pledge to wear my seat belt whenever I am riding in Fire Department
vehicles. I further pledge to ensure that all my brother and sister
firefighters riding with me wear their seat belts.
I make this pledge willingly; to honor Brian Hunton, my brother
firefighter, and because wearing seat belts is the right thing to do.
On My Honor, I So Pledge:
The award signifying that the “Columbia Fire Department has achieved
100 percent participation in the seat belt pledge campaign to ensure
that everyone goes home,” was received in March of 2009. This award is
endorsed and signed by the directors of the following organizations:
§ United States Fire Service Administration
§ International Association of Fire Chiefs
§ National Fallen Firefighters Foundation
§ National Fire Protection Association
§ National Volunteer Fire Council
§ National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)
The progress of the campaign can be tracked on the TrainingDivision.com
Web site. There you will note that the Columbia Fire Department is one
of only seven departments in the state of Missouri and one of 107,638
nationally to achieve 100 percent participation (to date). Also of note,
the fire department’s participation included all member of the
Columbia Fire Department, including support staff.
