Late afternoon extrication crash on Route B claims one life

COLUMBIA, MO (February 6, 2009) - The Columbia Fire Department
responded to a report of extrication crash in the 4500 block of Rout B
at 4:11 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 5. Responding units were advised that
numerous 9-1-1 calls reported that at least one, and possibly two, of
the injured had been ejected from the vehicles which collided.

Firefighters arrived to find a ¾ ton flatbed pickup truck in the
southbound lanes of Route B and the driver lying in the grass on the
west side of the road. The driver was treated on the scene and then
transported to University Hospitals as a “Class 2” trauma patient.
Class 2 indicates that the victim had possible life-threatening
injuries.

Firefighters found a passenger vehicle in the northbound lanes with one
person, the front seat passenger, trapped inside the vehicle. A second
person, the driver, was found outside the vehicle with obvious fatal
injuries and was pronounced dead by paramedics. The passenger was
extricated from the vehicle in less than 15 minutes and was then
transported to University Hospitals as a Class 2 trauma patient.

Traffic in all lanes and both directions of Route B was halted and
Route B was closed between US Highway 63 and Waco Road while emergency
scene personnel treated and transported the injured and law enforcement
officers conducted a crash investigation.

The Columbia Police Department is in charge of the scene and the crash
investigation. All questions concerning the possible cause as well as
victims’ names will be handled by the Columbia Police Department.
