Flooding dangers still possible; flash flood watch in effect until
noon
COLUMBIA, MO (June 16, 2009) - As the rain begins to exit mid-Missouri
later this morning, the Columbia/Boone County Office of Emergency
Management (OEM) continues to advise caution to city and county
residents.
“While the National Weather Service has cancelled the flash flood
warning for Boone County, there are still dangers associated with the
rain of the past 24 to 36 hours,” says Interim OEM Director Zim
Schwartze. “Those traveling on streets and highways need to be careful
at low water crossings, avoiding those areas where water covers the
road. In addition, roadways are still wet, meaning there’s still a
risk for motorists to hydroplane. We ask motorists throughout the area
to slow down, and be prepared for sudden stops.”
A flash flood watch remains in effect for Boone County until noon
today. Schwartze recommends that residents stay tuned to local media for
the latest weather information, and have a plan in place, in the event
of severe weather and flooding. The Office of Emergency Management
maintains an updated list of road closures on its Web site,
www.showmeboone.com/OEM/closures.htm.
