Remember those lost on Sept. 11
COLUMBIA, MO (September 11, 2009) - As Columbia, Boone County and the
nation take time to remember the victims of the 2001 terrorist attacks
on America, the Columbia/Boone County Office of Emergency Management
(OEM) reminds residents to also remember the law enforcement, fire and
other safety personnel who died that day.
“The attacks which occurred eight years ago today will never be
forgotten,” says Interim OEM Director Zim Schwartze. “While we take
time to remember those who died, we should take a special moment of
remembrance for those first responders who rushed into the World Trade
Center, without regard to their own safety, to rescue those trapped in
the buildings. We remember their sacrifice, on a day in which thousands
of our fellow Americans died, in an act of cowardice.”
Over 300 first responders died on Sept. 11, 2001. Flags at city
government buildings are flying at half-staff, in memory of those who
died that day.
