Mayor Hindman’s Statement on U.S. Census

COLUMBIA, MO (April 8, 2010) - As Columbia’s mayor, I want to remind
all Columbia citizens of the importance of filing out their Census forms
and sending them in. This simple act of citizenship takes only a few
minutes, will help guide decisions over the next 10 years and will
affect millions in federal funds allocated to this community.

As of 10 a.m. today, Columbia’s overall response rate was 66 percent.
Frankly, that’s not good enough. The city’s goal is 100 percent
participation, and we can’t get there unless each household takes
action. Here’s how we can do it.

Families and individuals…if you have not sent in your form, find it,
complete it and mail it back. If you don’t have a form, there are
questionnaire assistance centers throughout Columbia that can help you.

Employers…make sure your employees understand that a complete count
improves your ability to plan for future growth and expansion and that
their response is needed.

Landlords…you house a huge segment of Columbia’s population, including
thousands of students. Do whatever you can to make sure that your
tenants receive their Census forms, and post reminders on bulletin
boards, kiosks or wherever you spread information.

Students…whether you’re in a dorm or in other housing, this is your
home for Census purposes. Fill out the form, and send it in.

People of faith, service providers and agencies…you are in touch with
so many people who traditionally have been hard to count. Please make a
special effort to reach and remind them of their importance.

Local media…you reach thousands of people every day. Please help with
public service announcements, links to Census information on your Web
sites or editorials encouraging Columbians to make the push to 100
percent participation.

I know what we’re capable of doing here in Columbia. We had tremendous
support for the ZooToo effort at the Humane Society; for the
University’s Children’s Hospital, through the Zimmer Radio Group; and
for bringing Google high-speed fiber to the community. There’s no reason
we can’t equal that success with the 2010 Census.
