Six Injured When Car Crashes Into JCPenney

Columbia Fire Fighters were called at 2:22 p.m. on Saturday, December 18, 2010 to 2301 West Worley Street, JCPenney-Columbia Mall, for a report of an injury accident.

Fire crews arrived and found a red, four-door Hyundai passenger vehicle, which had crashed through the exterior doors of the store and was resting approximately 100 feet inside the store.  Six injured victims were located in the store, five of which were transported to University Hospital, one to Women's and Children's Hospital, by ambulance with minor injuries.  Initial reports to fire crews indicate the driver of the vehicle, an elderly female, may have suffered a medical emergency prior to accident.  She was also treated by emergency crews at the scene but was not transported to a hospital.

No victims were trapped and no extrication was required.

Both JCPenney and the Columbia Mall remain open.  Only the immediate area inside JCPenney impacted by this accident has been closed.
