2010 Census: Columbia and Boone County Beat National Mail-Back Rate

COLUMBIA, MO (May 4, 2010) - Seventy-five percent, and counting. That’s
the percentage of households in Columbia and Boone County, respectively,
that have mailed 2010 US Census forms back to the Census Bureau. Each
jurisdiction stands at 75 percent.

On April 28, 2010 Bureau Director Robert Groves announced a national
mail-back rate of 72 percent, with Missouri participating at 73
percent.

According to data displayed on the Bureau’s online, interactive map,
more than half of Columbia’s Census tracts participated at 70 percent or
better. Three tracts have reached 80 percent or more.

“This is a great initial response from citizens,” said Mayor Robert
McDavid. “I believe that our numbers will increase when Census takers
start visiting households where information is missing.”

McDavid acknowledged the influence of the Columbia/Boone County
Complete Count Alliance, co-chaired by Presiding Commissioner Ken
Pearson and former Mayor Darwin Hindman. “I have no doubt that these
active community leaders urged their personal and professional networks
to spread the word about the importance of the Census,” McDavid said.

According to information released by the Census Bureau, Census takers
will start their visits in May. They should properly identify themselves
when going door-to-door.

“Everyone counts, and everyone should be counted,” McDavid said. “Our
final numbers will influence business decisions, Congressional
representation and the fair distribution of federal tax dollars back to
our community.”
