Evening Fire Severely Damages West-Side Duplex

Columbia Fire Department and Boone County Fire Protection District Fire Fighters were called at 4:37 P.M. on Friday, October 29, 2010 to 1013 Scott Blvd. for a report of a structure fire, after nearby construction workers observed the fire.

Fire crews arrived and found smoke and flames coming from a two story duplex. Upon entry, crews discovered a fire in the garage which had spread to the interior of the walls and the attic. Due to the stubborn nature of the fire, at 5:18 P.M. Columbia Fire Department officials called in an additional two Quint companies to assist in extinguishing the flames. It took crews approximately 45 minutes to bring the flames under control. The structure sustained significant heat, smoke, and water damage throughout. There were no injuries and damage is currently estimated at $30,000 to the duplex owned by Eldin and Mulija Caldarevic.

Investigators from the Columbia Fire Department were on-scene and at this time, the cause remains under investigation.

Mrs. Caldarevic indicated to fire crews that she was sleeping alone in the home when the construction workers "banged on the door and told me to get out because the house was on fire." She said the smoke alarms were sounding; however, she is a "heavy sleeper" and did not wake to them.

The occupants of the other side of the duplex (1015 Scott Blvd.), Tierney Barnes and Shawn-Patrick Campbell, said they were also in their home when construction workers alerted them to the fire.
