Car Crashes Into Residence

COLUMBIA, MO (December 29, 2011) - Just before 4:00 p.m. today the Columbia Fire Department responded to a reported automobile accident at 1810 North Garth Avenue, near the intersection of Garth and Leslie Lane.

Fire crews arrived on the scene to find a white Mercury Grand Marquis partially visible in the building's garage door opening. Further investigation revealed that the visible vehicle had driven through the closed garage door, striking a vehicle parked in the garage, and pushing it approximately three feet into the living portion of the residence.

The vehicle's occupants had exited the car prior to the fire department's arrival. An adult female and three juveniles were transported to a local hospital for evaluation. No one in the residence was injured.

As a precaution, fire crews requested that representatives from the City of Columbia's Building and Site Safety Department respond to the scene to evaluate the building for any significant structural damage. The building was determined to be safe for occupancy.

The Columbia Police Department was at the scene investigating the cause of the crash.

The Columbia Fire Department reminds all residents that seat belts save lives. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, buckling up is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash.
