Fire Damages Playground Equipment at Cosmo Bethel Park

COLUMBIA, MO (July 26, 2011) - For Immediate Release:

Fire Damages Playground Equipment at Cosmo Bethel Park

 

Columbia Fire Fighters were called at 5:46 pm on Tuesday, July 11, 2011, to 4500 Bethel Street, for a small outside fire.

 

When Fire Fighters left Station 7 they could see a large column of black smoke coming from the area near the park. Upon their arrival they found a large piece of playground equipment fully involved. The fire was knocked down in 3 to 4 minutes but the playground equipment sustained heavy damage.

 

Mike Griggs, Parks Services Manager, with Columbia Parks and Recreation was on the scene and stated that when the unit was purchased it cost around $30,000.00 with another $15,000.00 for the installation. In today's dollars Mr. Griggs estimated that it could run between $50, to $60,000.00 to replace. He also stated that he had crews coming to erect a fence around the structure to prevent children from playing on the equipment.

 

Assistant Fire Marshal Shawn McCollom responded to the scene to investigate the fire and at the time of this release indicated the fire was still under investigation. There were no injuries reported as a result of this fire.
