Summer sidewalk repair program begins
COLUMBIA, MO (June 14, 2011) - The Public Works Street Division is teaming up this summer with Job Point and Columbia high school students to do sidewalk repairs and other street projects throughout Columbia. Job Point is a local agency that provides career planning and placement assistance for many individuals in the community. Staff from both organizations will be spending the summer learning new skills needed for future employment possibilities.
This is the third year Public Works has been working with the high school students. "The program has been very successful in providing additional laborers during our busy season and teaching new skills to people who are training for future employment" said Mary Ellen Lea, Operations Manager. "We are seeing people come out of the training program with the skills needed to actually begin working for the city" said Lea.
Crews are working under the direction of a city Street Division supervisor this summer to learn such skills as sidewalk repair and street maintenance. The program will run throughout the summer concentrating mainly on repairs to broken sidewalks throughout residential neighborhoods and downtown.
