Public Health Nurses Perform a Variety of Services

(COLUMBIA, MO) - Thirteen dedicated nurses at the Columbia/Boone County Department of Public Health and Human Services will be recognized by Department Director Stephanie Browning in honor of Nurse's Day, tomorrow, May 6th.

"Our nurses work daily to improve the health of all Boone County residents", said Browning. "Through immunizations, STD clinics, smoking cessation programs, women's health clinics and much more, public health nurses touch the lives of thousands each year."

In 2010, health department nurses:

*Completed over 1,000 communicable disease investigations

*Performed 1,119 women's health screenings and 2,191 STD screenings

*Gave 10,465 flu vaccines (including nearly 4,700 at area elementary schools)

*Provided almost 12,000 other vaccinations (not including flu)

*Assisted those who want to quit smoking at 140 smoking cessation counseling sessions

Public health nurses provide classes and presentations on a variety of other topics including birth control, hepatitis, chronic disease, tuberculosis, infant care and asthma. The health department also offers a number of public health-related educational opportunities throughout the year for child care providers.

The nurses will be honored with a breakfast next Wednesday, May 11th from 8-9 am. Health department clinic nurses will be unavailable at that time and will open at 9 am for regular services.
