Fire Damages Southwest Columbia Duplex

COLUMBIA, MO (October 13, 2011) - At approximately 11:17 a.m.today, the Columbia Fire Department responded to a reported residential structure fire at 1611 Radcliffe Drive, in southwest Columbia.  Fire crews arrived on the scene to find a single-story duplex with smoke coming from the building. Fire fighters discovered fire in the ceiling and attic area of the residence and were able to control the fire in about fifteen minutes. Fire crews remained on the scene for approximately two hours while they conducted overhaul operations.

The fire was reported by the two occupants of the residence when they smelled smoke and noticed a haze forming in the apartment. The occupants then called 9-1-1and evacuated the residence.

Fire damage was contained mostly to the kitchen, hallway and attic of the residence. The apartment where the fire occurred is uninhabitable until repairs are made. The adjoining apartment was unoccupied at the time of the fire and sustained no fire damage but did have a strong smoke odor present.

The fire was determined to have originated in electrical wiring in the attic of the structure. Damage is estimated at $7,500. There were no injuries.

The Columbia Fire Department wants to remind residents that working smoke alarms do save lives. Test your smoke alarms at least once a month by pressing the test button. Replace smoke alarm batteries at least once a year. Replace smoke alarms every 10 years. To ensure adequate protection, place smoke alarms in every sleeping room, and in a common area on every floor. If you can not afford a smoke alarm, call the Columbia Fire Department at 573-874-7556 to schedule an appointment to have free smoke alarms installed. For residents who need assistance in checking their smoke alarms, they can also contact the Columbia Fire Department.
