Neighborhood Congress will be held Tuesday, Sept. 27

COLUMBIA, MO (September 20, 2011) - The public is invited to attend a Neighborhood Congress on Tuesday, Sept. 27, from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Activity and Recreation Center, 1701 W. Ash St. The event is sponsored by the city of Columbia's Office of Neighborhood Services, Unite 4 Health Neighborhoods and University Extension.

The purpose of the Neighborhood Congress is to foster greater communication between residents, elected officials and city staff. The congress also allows for networking among community leaders and for residents to discuss issues specific to their ward. The event is free and open to the public; no reservation is required.

>From 5 to 6 p.m., several City Council members will be available for discussion and city departments will have informational tables. Columbia City Council office hours are as follows:

o        Fred Schmidt, Ward 1: 5-6 p.m.

o        Jason Thornhill, Ward 2: 5-5:45 p.m.

o        Gary Kespohl, Ward 3: 5-6 p.m.

o        Daryl Dudley, Ward 4: 5-6 p.m.

o        Helen Anthony, Ward 5: 5-6 p.m.

o        Barbara Hoppe, Ward 6: 5-6 p.m.

>From 6 to 8:30 p.m., the Neighborhood Congress will be held to allow residents to discuss the following topics selected by Columbia's neighborhood associations:

o        Growth management

o        Code enforcement

o        Public infrastructure

o        Ward reapportionment

o        Rental housing maintenance

o        A second round of discussions will take place by ward on topics specific to that region of the city.

The Neighborhood Congress was an idea generated from the Imagine Columbia's Visioning project and supports the vision that Columbia will be a connected, informed, engaged community.
