COLUMBIA, MO (July 5, 2012) - For Immediate Release:

Morning Fire Closes Local Restaurant for a Few Days 

 

Columbia Fire Fighters were called at 08:41am on Thursday, July 5, 2012, to 1100 Knipp Street, Dennys Restaurant, for a reported Commercial Structure Fire.

 

Upon their arrival, at 08:46, crews reported the building was being evacuated; there was smoke inside the building, and smoke showing from the rear of the structure. Further investigation revealed that a small fire had occurred behind the water heater in the mechanical room. The fire was completely extinguished shortly after crews arrived and extensive overhaul was conducted to insure no hidden fire remained. Large fans were used to remove smoke from the structure.

 

Assistant Fire Marshal Tim Bach investigated the fire and stated the cause of the fire was a malfunction in the gas water heater. He also issued a preliminary damage estimate of $ 10,000.00. During the investigation it was learned that the employees had discovered the fire and had successfully used a portable fire extinguisher to partially extinguish it prior to the arrival of fire crews. There were no injuries reported as a result of the fire.

 

The Columbia Fire Department would also like to remind business owners and residents that the use of a fire extinguisher is a learned skill. You should be familiar with the operation of the extinguisher and the methods of extinguishment before attempting to extinguish a small fire.
