Large Outside Fire Threatens Local Townhomes

COLUMBIA, MO (July 5, 2012) - Large Outside Fire Threatens Local Townhomes

 

Columbia Fire Fighters were called at 2:03 pm on Thursday, July 5, 2012, to 2700 Green Valley Drive, Broadway Townhomes, for a reported large outside fire.

 

Upon their arrival, at 2:07 crews found a large grass fire with flames reaching 6 feet in height moving toward one of the apartment buildings at this address. Crews stopped the fire 15-20 feet from the structure and then continued extinguishing the trees and brush that had become involved. There was no structural damage as a result of this fire. Crews did find fireworks debris in three locations throughout the burned area but there were no witnesses to the start of the fire.

 

The Columbia Fire Department would like to remind residents that the discharge of fireworks within the city limits is prohibited by City Ordinance. Due to the continued high temperatures, lack of moisture, and low humidity, extreme caution should be exercised when disposing of smoking materials, barbeque ash, or any other open ignition source.
