Discarded Cigarette Damages Mobile Home
COLUMBIA, MO (June 13, 2012) - At 10:55 a.m. Wednesday the Columbia Fire Department responded to a reported residential structure fire at 3501 Clark Lane, the Creekwood Estates Mobile Home Park, Lot 133. Creekwood Estates is located just northeast of the I-70 and Highway 63 connector.
Fire fighters arrived on the scene to find the smoldering remains of a fire on the outside of the 50 x 20 mobile home at lot 133. Fire fighters used hand tools to remove a portion of the mobile home's vinyl siding and skirting and a portable water extinguisher to extinguish the remaining hot spots. Damage was contained to an approximately 8' x 8'area of vinyl exterior, a deck railing, and a few floor joists.
The fire was reported to 9-1-1 by neighbors and mobile home park personnel who used a nearby garden hose to extinguish the small fire. The owner of the residence was inside the mobile home and was alerted to the fire by the commotion outside. "Fortunately, this fire was caught early and was small enough to be fought safely by the neighbors who discovered the fire" said Fire Captain John Metz. "We encourage everyone to have and know not only how, but when, to use a home multipurpose fire extinguisher. If there is any doubt, get out and call 9-1-1" Metz said.
Assistant Fire Marshal Lt. Tim Bach investigated the fire and determined an improperly discarded cigarette was the cause. Damage is estimated at $2500. There were no injuries. Smoke detectors were present in the home and did function properly. Fire crews were on the scene for approximately one hour.
The Columbia Fire Department wants to remind residents that working smoke alarms do save lives. Test your smoke alarms at least once a month by pressing the test button. Replace smoke alarm batteries at least once a year. Replace smoke alarms every 10 years. To ensure adequate protection, place smoke alarms in every sleeping room, and in a common area on every floor.
