Morning Fire Damages Home
COLUMBIA, MO (November 4, 2012) - The Columbia Fire Department was dispatched to a residential structure fire at 3501 New Haven Road, Woodstock Trailer Court, lot 186 at 9:23am this morning. The occupant of the home called 9-1-1 and advised the home was filling with smoke.
Columbia firefighters arrived on the scene at 9:28 a.m. and found heavy smoke coming from the roof. Upon entering the home they found fire around a fire place and an adjoining wall. Firefighters performed an aggressive fire attack and brough the situation under control in ten minutes. Fire crews spent an additional hour overhauling the damage, removing burned drywall and charred insulation. Two adults and two children were home at the time of the fire. No one was injured.
Columbia Fire Investigator Lieutenant Lisa Todd estimates damages at $40,000. The investigation into the cause of the fire is on-going.
Three fire engines, a ladder and a rescue squad responded to the fire.
The Columbia Fire Department wants to remind residents that working smoke alarms do save lives. Test your smoke alarms at least once a month by pressing the test button. Replace smoke alarm batteries at least once a year. Replace smoke alarms every 10 years. To ensure adequate protection, place smoke alarms in every sleeping room, and in a common area on every floor. If you cannot afford a smoke alarm, call the Columbia Fire Department at 573-874-7556 to schedule an appointment to have free smoke alarms installed. For residences who need assistance in checking their smoke alarms, they can also contact the Columbia Fire Department.
