Morning Fire Damages Home

COLUMBIA, MO (November 24, 2012) - The Columbia Fire Department was dispatched to a residential structure fire at 4512 Orchard Lane, unit B at 10:39am this morning.  The initial call was from a neighbor who reported one of the units in the duplex was on fire.

Columbia firefighters arrived on the scene at 10:42 a.m. and found heavy smoke coming from the front of the structure.  Fire crews entered unit B on the west side of the building and encountered heavy fire and smoke.  They performed an aggressive fire attack and brought the situation under control in thirteen minutes.  The fire was contained to the unit it originated in.  Fire crews spent an additional hour overhauling the damage, removing burned drywall and charred insulation.  Two adults were home at the time of the fire and made it out safely.  No one was injured.

Columbia Fire Investigator Lieutenant Shawn McCollom estimates damages at $150,000.  The investigation into the cause is on-going.

Three fire engines, a ladder and a rescue squad responded to the fire.

The Columbia Fire Department wants to remind residents that working smoke alarms do save lives. Test your smoke alarms at least once a month by pressing the test button. Replace smoke alarm batteries at least once a year. Replace smoke alarms every 10 years. To ensure adequate protection, place smoke alarms in every sleeping room, and in a common area on every floor. If you cannot afford a smoke alarm, call the Columbia Fire Department at 573-874-7556 to schedule an appointment to have free smoke alarms installed. For residences who need assistance in checking their smoke alarms, they can also contact the Columbia Fire Department.
