Fire Causes Minor Damage to North Columbia Home

COLUMBIA, MO (November 15, 2012) - For Immediate Release:

Fire Causes Minor Damage to North Columbia Home

 

On 11/15/2012, members of the Columbia Fire Department were dispatched, at 3:38 pm, to a reported residential structure fire at 4108 Tropical Ln. 

 

Upon their arrival at 3:41 crews reported a small mulch fire near the structure and under the gas meter. The crew from Quint 9 returned all other apparatus that were en-route as they extinguished the fire with a pressurized water fire extinguisher.

 

Lt Shawn McCollom investigated the fire and determined the cause of the fire was the improper disposal of smoking materials. He also issued a damage estimate of $ 250.00. There were no injuries reported as a result of the fire. 

 

The Columbia Fire Department wants to remind residents that working smoke alarms do save lives. Test your smoke alarms at least once a month by pressing the test button. Replace smoke alarm batteries at least once a year. Replace smoke alarms every 10 years. To ensure adequate protection, place smoke alarms in every sleeping room, and in a common area on every floor. If you cannot afford a smoke alarm, call the Columbia Fire Department at 573-874-7556 to schedule an appointment to have free smoke alarms installed. For residences who need assistance in checking their smoke alarms, they can also contact the Columbia Fire Department.
