Residents Encouraged to Register for Smart911

COLUMBIA, MO (August 13, 2014) - With the return to school for thousands of students in all levels, Public Safety Joint Communications today reminded parents of the county's free Smart911 service, which can greatly assist emergency responders in the event of an emergency.

"Smart 911 helps on several levels," said PSJC Operation Manager Brian Maydwell. "Smart911 improves the quality and quantity of information available to our telecommunicators. In turn, when emergency responders are dispatched to a scene, they are better prepared and have information on the victim."

Maydwell encouraged parents of incoming college students to make sure their children are registered with Smart911: "In the event that a student who is attending college away from home has a medical emergency and cannot clearly talk with telecommunicators, having a Smart911 account can make their medical history, allergies and medication information available to emergency responders. That can be the difference when seconds count."

When a registered landline or cell phone calls into the PSJC Operations Center, the entered information is automatically made available to the telecommunicator. The information entered is kept private and secure and only viewable by emergency personnel when the registered user calls 9-1-1.  The information is then only available for the amount of time necessary to address the emergency.

It is free to register for Smart911, and once registered the entered information can also be available to responders in other areas of the country that use the system.

To find out more about Smart911, or to register for free, log on to the website www.Smart911.com.
