37th Annual Heritage Festival & Craft Show

COLUMBIA, MO (August 27, 2014) - Visitors will be taken back to the traditions of the past as they “listen, learn and see history come alive” at the 37th Annual Heritage Festival and Craft Show, September 20-21, at the historic Nifong Park. Organized by Columbia Parks and Recreation, this FREE festival runs from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. on both days and features traditional and roots entertainment, reenactors, a handmade craft show, and artisans and tradesmen dressed in 19th century attire demonstrating their "lost" trades and selling their wares.

 

Also featured at the Festival will be a Cowboy Camp, Lewis and Clark Outpost and a Mountain Man Camp. A 19th Century Minstrel and Medicine Man Show will entertain all ages and kids can “pan for gold” in the Prospector’s Camp, ride on a hayride around the park and try out traditional crafts and games in the “Fun For Young’uns” area.

 

Attendees will enjoy live entertainment including multi-national traditional music, traditional storytellers and returning fest-favorites the Haskell Indian Nations Dancers, folk musicians Dave Para and Cathy Barton, Rhineland Wurstjaegers, Ironweed Bluegrass Band and Swampweed Cajun Band. New this year and soon to be favorites: the Boomchux (String Band / Old Time Western / Swing Revival) and the Boone Howlers (Americana / Bluegrass / Rockabilly).

 

This year marks the 200th anniversary of our nation’s beloved national anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner.” In recognition, a portrayal of Frances Scott Key and his music will be featured on Saturday. Please see schedule at www.GoColumbiaMo.com for complete list of performers.

 

The Boone County Historical Society will be welcoming Heritage Festival visitors in several venues in Nifong Park, including 3 historic structures in The Village at Boone Junction and the historic Maplewood House, built in 1877. The Walters-Boone Museum will also be open to visitors for tours. Hundreds of items are on display and featured exhibits include Home and Community; 1910 - 1920, Blind Boone's 1891 custom-made Grand Piano and the Missouri Watercolor Society's National Invitational Art Exhibit in the huge, Montminy Art Gallery. Museum tours will cost $3 per person.
