Dedication Planned for 3M Flat Branch-Hinkson Creek Wetlands

COLUMBIA, MO (May 12, 2014) - Columbia Parks and Recreation is planning a dedication of the 3M Flat Branch-Hinkson Creek Wetlands. It will be held from 3:30-5 p.m. on May 15, with the dedication ceremony scheduled at 4 p.m.

The site is located at the two-mile marker of the MKT Trail. Those attending the ceremony should park at either the Forum Nature Area (2701 Forum) or the MKT Trail access at 800 Stadium. The wetlands site is about a half-mile from either spot; golf cart shuttles will be available for those who prefer not to walk.

The 3M Flat Branch-Hinkson Creek Wetlands is the result of a collaboration of 16 agency partners and 3M, with the purpose of restoring the area. It was formerly the site of the City of Columbia’s second sewer treatment plant.

The wetland cells treat stormwater runoff from approximately 140 acres of urban watershed and can store an estimated 10,000,000 gallons of runoff. The old sewer treatment pumphouse was repurposed into a viewing platform with a green roof.

The project was funded by a $40,000 3M Foundation Environmental Stewardship Grant, as well as Park Sales Tax funds; and grants from the U.S. Fisheries and Wildlife Service, Missouri Conservation Heritage Foundation, National Association of Counties Research Foundation and the Recreational Trails Program. Forest ReLeaf of Missouri made an in-kind donation of trees and shrubs. Many other agency partners contributed to the project by providing staff time and/or labor.
