Columbia Regional Airport announces the substantial completion of the Airport Runway Intersection Project, prepares for future infrastructure projects

COLUMBIA, MO (December 2, 2015) - Columbia Regional Airport is excited to announce the completion of the Airport Runway Intersection Project which began in August. Emery Sapp & Son, the project contractor, substantially completed the project in late November.

The project involved the demolition and rebuilding of the pavement at the intersection of the main runway and crosswind runway to improve safety and as a prerequisite for future runway improvement projects.

The investment towards improved airfield infrastructure was $4.9 million. Ninety percent of the project ($4.41 million) was funded via Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) grants. The remaining 10 percent ($490,000) was funded by local Transportation Sales Tax revenue.

Future infrastructure improvements include repositioning, rebuilding and lengthening the crosswind runway. The main runway will also be lengthened from 6,401 feet to 7,401 feet.

The design phase of the improved crosswind runway will begin in 2016, with construction anticipated to begin in 2017 dependent upon FAA funding.

Also in 2016, to accommodate the repositioning and lengthening of the crosswind runway, Rangeline Road from Route H to just south of the Airport Traffic Control Tower will be repositioned and reconstructed to the east of its current location. Leavenworth Excavation and Contracting was the successful project bidder.

The Rangeline Road project investment for improved airport infrastructure will be $1.5 million. Ninety percent of the project ($1.35 million) will be funded via FAA grants. The remaining 10 percent ($150,000) will be funded by local Transportation Sales Tax revenue.

According the latest report from the Missouri Department of Transportation - Aviation Division, Columbia Regional Airport contributes $87 million, directly and indirectly, to the economy in Mid-Missouri. By investing in infrastructure improvements at Columbia Regional Airport, we improve our ability to retain current companies and attract future businesses, additional flights, destinations, air carriers and to improve air travel opportunities and experiences.
