Race and Equity Forum planned for May 3
COLUMBIA, MO (April 26, 2016) - On Tuesday, May 3, the City of Columbia, in conjunction with the University of Missouri, Columbia Public Schools, Heart of Missouri United Way, and many other community partners, will host a Race and Equity Forum in the Hickman High School Gymnasium, 1104 N Providence Road, from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
The event will highlight K-12 education and poverty with regards to the race and equity issues within the City of Columbia. Carla London, student/faculty advocacy supervisor for the Columbia Public Schools, will provide a compelling presentation on diversity, coupled with a simulated exercise on poverty designed to give participants experiential learning into the choices many families must make.
London has a combined 14 years of experience in education, nine years as a social worker, including four years as an emergency room medical social worker at Children's Medical Center of Dallas and three years as a small business owner in Dallas.
Her passion is working with children, families, and staff to provide a safe, nurturing and stimulating educational experience. She continues to advocate for ways to assist youth in acquiring the skills they need to be successful and reducing discipline disproportionality among minority youth.
The event is free and open to the public. Registration for this event is not required but is greatly appreciated. Visit www.como.gov/announcements/race-and-equity-forum/ for more details and to pre-register. Light refreshments will be provided.
