Asphalt overlay scheduled for Carter Lane, Southland Drive  Aug. 8-12

COLUMBIA, MO (August 5, 2016) - The Public Works Department announced on Friday that the Street Division plans to asphalt overlay Carter Lane and Southland Drive  Aug. 8-12, weather permitting.

Southland Drive is scheduled for overlay from Rock Quarry Road to East Nifong Boulevard. Carter Lane is scheduled for overlay from the Buttonwood Drive roundabout to just south of Green Meadows Road.

The City of Columbia maintains 1,360 lane miles of roadway. Street maintenance follows the 2016 Pavement Management Plan, which was presented to the City Council on May 2, 2016.  The plan is based on the principle that preventative and rehabilitative street maintenance is more cost effective than reconstruction.

One form of street maintenance is referred to as asphalt overlay. Rather than milling the street,  asphalt is laid on the surface of the existing street. Once asphalt has been laid, it can be driven on almost immediately. However, drivers are asked to watch for and respect the detour commands of flaggers as workers put the final touches on the road, such as smoothing it out with heavy road rollers.

"The benefits of asphalt are durability, cost effectiveness, smoothness and the ability to install it relatively quickly," said Public Works Director Dave Nichols.  "It is also a recyclable asset."

Motorist and nonmotorized transportation users should expect temporary lane closures while the work is being performed. In addition, motorists, pedestrians and nonmotorized transportation users should use caution in the work zone or use alternate routes when possible.
